What is an NTC temperature sensor?

The working principle of NTC temperature sensor is mainly based on the thermal effect, that is, the phenomenon that the resistivity of a material changes under temperature changes. Its core component is thermistor, which is usually made of a mixture of semiconductor materials such as metal oxides such as manganese, cobalt, nickel and copper.

Thermistors have a unique characteristic, namely, they have a negative temperature coefficient. Specifically, when the temperature rises, the resistance value of the thermistor will drop rapidly; when the temperature drops, the resistance value will rise. With this characteristic that the resistance value changes with temperature, the NTC temperature sensor has the ability to measure temperature.

From the structural composition point of view, the NTC temperature sensor is generally composed of a thermistor (that is, a thermistor), a shell, and a wire. Among them, the thermistor plays the most critical role. It is responsible for sensing the changes in the ambient temperature and converting this temperature change into a corresponding change in the resistance value. The quality of the wire will directly affect the overall stability and accuracy of the NTC sensor.

Home appliances

Air conditioner : There are multiple NTC temperature sensors installed inside the air conditioner. The sensor of the indoor unit monitors the indoor temperature in real time, while the sensor of the outdoor unit controls the outdoor ambient temperature. When the user sets the target temperature, the sensor can keenly perceive the difference between the actual temperature and the set value, and quickly transmit the signal to the control system, thereby accurately adjusting the intensity of cooling or heating to keep the indoor temperature within a comfortable and energy-saving range.

Refrigerator : In refrigerators and freezers, NTC temperature sensors constantly monitor the internal temperature to ensure that the temperature is stable in a range suitable for food preservation and freezing, avoiding food spoilage due to excessively high temperatures or energy waste due to excessively low temperatures.

Water Heater : The NTC temperature sensor is responsible for preventing the water temperature from being too high. When the water temperature approaches the set maximum temperature during the heating process, the sensor will notify the heating system to stop heating or reduce power to ensure the safety of the user and the normal operation of the equipment.

Dishwasher : The NTC temperature sensor can monitor the water temperature during internal cleaning and accurately control the water temperature within the appropriate range according to different cleaning program requirements to achieve ideal cleaning and disinfection effects.

Automotive Industry

In the automotive field, NTC temperature sensors are widely used and are of vital importance. In the car's air conditioning system, NTC temperature sensors distributed at the air outlet and in the car compartment sense the temperature changes in the car compartment in real time. When the driver and passengers adjust the air conditioning temperature, the sensor responds quickly and transmits the relevant signal to the air conditioning control system, which then adjusts the cooling or heating air volume, wind speed and other parameters to create a comfortable driving environment.

For the water temperature monitoring of the car, the NTC temperature sensor is installed in the engine coolant circulation system, just like the "thermometer" of the car engine, paying close attention to the coolant temperature. Once the temperature exceeds the normal working range, it will immediately send a signal to the engine control unit, triggering the cooling system to increase the heat dissipation or issue a warning to prevent the engine from malfunctioning due to overheating.
In terms of intake temperature monitoring, the NTC temperature sensor can accurately measure the air temperature entering the engine. The engine control unit accurately adjusts the fuel injection amount and ignition time based on this temperature data to ensure that the engine combustion efficiency is in the best state, and the car's power output is stable and the fuel economy is good.
In addition, there are NTC temperature sensors on the engine body to monitor its operating temperature at all times to protect the normal operation of the engine. In new energy vehicles, battery pack temperature monitoring is inseparable from NTC temperature sensors. They grasp the temperature of the battery in real time to prevent the battery from overheating and causing safety hazards. At the same time, it also helps to optimize the battery's charge and discharge management, improve the battery's service life and overall performance, and ensure the normal operation of the car and driving safety in all aspects.

Medical Devices

In the field of medical equipment, NTC temperature sensors have many important applications. For example, the core component of digital thermometers is NTC temperature sensors. With its high sensitivity to temperature changes, it can quickly and accurately measure human body temperature and provide key basic data for doctors to judge the condition.
In the incubator, NTC temperature sensors play a key role in maintaining a stable temperature environment. Whether it is cell culture or microbial culture, precise temperature control is required. The sensor monitors the temperature in the box in real time and cooperates with the temperature control system to keep the temperature in the set suitable range to ensure that cells or microorganisms can grow and reproduce normally.

In dialysis equipment, NTC temperature sensors are responsible for monitoring the temperature of the dialysate, because the temperature of the dialysate directly affects the effect of dialysis treatment and the comfort of the patient. Only by accurately controlling the temperature in the appropriate range can the entire dialysis process be ensured to be safe and effective.
In addition, medical equipment such as respirators also need NTC temperature sensors to monitor the temperature of the airflow to ensure that the temperature of the gas delivered to the patient is appropriate to avoid adverse stimulation to the patient's respiratory tract, etc., providing strong support for the smooth development of medical work.

Application for other area

In aerospace, aircraft engines will generate extremely high temperatures during operation. NTC temperature sensors are installed in key parts of the engine to monitor temperature changes in real time to ensure flight safety. Once the temperature is abnormal, they can promptly remind ground control personnel and crew members to take corresponding measures. Satellites operate in extreme environments in space, and many of their internal devices also rely on NTC temperature sensors to monitor the temperature to ensure the normal operation of the equipment.
In security equipment, the NTC temperature sensor in the fire alarm can keenly sense the abnormal increase in ambient temperature. When the temperature exceeds the set threshold, the alarm device is quickly triggered to gain precious rescue time. Thermal imagers use NTC temperature sensors to detect temperature differences between different objects, and then generate clear thermal imaging images to assist security personnel in discovering potential dangers.
In the agricultural field, NTC temperature sensors can be used to monitor soil temperature. Farmers can arrange farming activities such as sowing and irrigation according to temperature data. They can also be used to monitor the temperature of the plant growth environment, such as temperature control in greenhouses, to create good growth conditions for crops.
In terms of consumer electronics, smart phones, tablets and other devices have compact internal space, but in order to prevent overheating and damage to electronic components, they are built with small NTC temperature sensors to monitor the device temperature in real time. When the temperature is too high, the system will take measures such as frequency reduction to cool down and ensure stable operation of the device. These fully demonstrate the wide range of applications of NTC temperature sensors.

Water Meters vs Flow Meters

While all water meters are flow meters, not all flow meters are water meters. The quick and dirty difference is that a water meter measures the volume of water as it passes through the meter and a flow meter measures the speed at which the water passes through the meter.
