What is an  bimetallic thermometer?

The bimetallic thermometer is a thermometer based on the principle of solid thermal expansion. It uses two metal sheets with different expansion coefficients, which are welded tightly together to form a unique temperature sensing element. When the ambient temperature changes, the bimetallic sheet will bend and deform due to the inconsistent expansion or contraction of the two metals, and the degree of deformation is directly related to the temperature. The temperature value can be displayed intuitively through the mechanical transmission devices such as the pointer and dial connected to it.

Inside the thermometer, there is a spiral bimetal piece, which is like an "elf" that is extremely sensitive to temperature. This bimetallic piece is made of two metals with significantly different thermal expansion coefficients, such as common brass and Invar alloy. When the outside temperature increases, a metal with a large expansion coefficient (such as brass) will expand much more than another metal, which forces the bimetal to bend toward the metal with a small expansion coefficient. As the temperature continues to change, the degree of bending changes precisely. At one end of the bimetal piece, a slender pointer shaft is connected. The pointer is fixed on the pointer shaft. When the bimetal piece bends, it will drive the pointer shaft to rotate, allowing the pointer to "gracefully" on the dial. Dance", accurately indicating the corresponding temperature value.

Bimetallic thermometer advantages

First of all, compared with traditional mercury thermometers, it completely eliminates the risk of mercury damage. During use and disposal, it will not cause any harm to the environment and human health. It is environmentally friendly and safe.
It is also extremely convenient to install and use. It does not need to calibrate electronic components like electronic thermometers, nor does it need to worry about the fragility of glass thermometers. It can be put into use immediately after simple fixing, saving users a lot of time and energy.
Sturdy and durable, the stainless steel protective sleeve can effectively resist external impact and vibration. Even in the continuous mechanical vibration environment of industrial production sites, or in the harsh conditions of wind, sun, rain and snow outdoors, it can still operate stably and reliably, and provide accurate temperature data for a long time.

In terms of reading, the clear and intuitive dial and pointer design allow users to accurately read the temperature value at a glance, without complicated operations or the help of additional equipment. Even ordinary workers without professional knowledge can easily get started.
From the perspective of cost-effectiveness, the manufacturing cost of bimetallic thermometers is relatively low, and the purchase and maintenance costs are within the affordable range for most users. It is undoubtedly a very cost-effective choice for large-scale industrial scenarios or small businesses and laboratories with limited budgets.

Bimetallic thermometer application

In industrial production, whether it is the high-temperature and high-pressure reactor in the refinery, the temperature control link of various chemical reactions in the chemical workshop, or the temperature monitoring of the heating and cooling process of materials on the food processing line, the bimetallic thermometer can accurately take on the task and provide key temperature data support for the stable operation of the production process and the reliable guarantee of product quality.
In daily life, the heat exchange station in the community heating system needs to monitor the hot water temperature at all times to ensure that every household is warm as spring. The staff of the heating company only needs to glance at the bimetallic thermometer to know the heating situation; the old-fashioned oven at home, relying on the pointer of the bimetallic thermometer to turn, allows you to easily control the temperature of baked food; even in some aquariums, it also silently guards the water temperature to create a suitable living environment for fish. It is also indispensable in the medical field. For example, some conventional disinfection and sterilization equipment must strictly control the temperature to achieve the ideal disinfection effect. The bimetallic thermometer is the temperature consultant trusted by the "brain" of the equipment; some thermotherapy instruments use it to accurately feedback the temperature to provide patients with a safe and comfortable treatment experience.
In the automotive industry, the car engine is called the "heart" of the car. The engine generates a lot of heat when running for a long time. The bimetallic thermometer monitors the water temperature and oil temperature in real time. Once the temperature rises abnormally, it can promptly alert the driver to avoid serious faults such as engine "boiling" and ensure driving safety.

Water Meters vs Flow Meters

While all water meters are flow meters, not all flow meters are water meters. The quick and dirty difference is that a water meter measures the volume of water as it passes through the meter and a flow meter measures the speed at which the water passes through the meter.
